On the morning of Saturday March 23, 2019, the MCHS Academic Challenge Team traveled to Francis Marion University to participate in the Pee Dee Regional Academic Challenge Tournament. Davan Rivers, captain, and Darius Hardison, co-captain received the coveted All-Star Trophy during the awards ceremony. The team underwent five rounds of round-robin style questioning, challenging their intelligence, reflexes, and cooperation skills. This years’ team, a completely new roster of students, has worked extremely hard and shown tremendous growth from six weeks of competition. Five of the eight-team members participating in the tournament were all freshman and overcame obstacles of not having the academic classes of Biology 1, Chemistry 1, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and World History. At the end of the tournament, the team ranked fifth in Division 2. Team Coaches Mrs. Boatwright, Mr. McRae, and Dr. Prince, are all extremely proud of this new roster of students that include seven freshmen and two sophomores. “We are expecting continued growth in academic excellence and student participation next year”. Team members have already started recruiting students for the 2019-2020 school year.
The MCHS Academic Challenge Team received an invitation to participate in the JV Division at the 37th Annual National Academic Challenge Championship in Arlington, Virginia. The Team qualified for this prestigious invitation based on their performance at the Pee Dee Regional Tournament by finishing in the top 15%.
