On Wednesday, October 24th, 260 Teacher Cadets from 18 high schools from all over the Pee Dee Region spent a day at Francis Marion University learning about education and university life. Schools were placed into groups and spent their day rotating around campus and engaging in various activities. During the course of the day, Teacher Cadets were able to meet with Admissions and the Center of Excellence for Children of Poverty.  In addition, they toured campus, which included touring the Smith Center, Rogers Library, and the dorms. After being introduced to the campus, the Teacher Cadets returned to Erving Dining Hall for a buffet, school cheers, and finally culminated in hearing all about education from the current South Carolina Teacher of the Year, Mr. Jeff Maxey.

All of the Teacher Cadets were able to meet other Teacher Cadets from the area and interact with current Francis Marion University students. The day was organized by Dr. Polly Haselden, Associate Professor of Education and Coordinator of Teacher Cadets, Francis Marion University Teaching Fellows, and current student enrolled as education majors.

Marlboro County High School attended this day with a total of 9 high school juniors/seniors (pictured above) and their instructor Penny Oxendine. They were able to celebrate as they were enrolled in the Teacher Cadet Course through Francis Marion University.

Marlboro County High School has 2 Teacher Cadet course: Teacher Cadet I and Teacher Cadet II. TCI is an introductory, dual credit course for juniors and seniors which teaches students about becoming an educator. The course allows them to intern in the local schools for about 20 days of experience with local schools, teachers, and students. TCII is an extension of TCI. The students in TCII are able to stay out in the field with local schools for an extended time. This course is designed for students who are seriously thinking about becoming teachers. Rising juniors and seniors can apply for both courses through an application process with Mrs. Penny Oxendine each spring.
